thru Namibia. What an experience! The entire trip report can be read on
my general blog, however here I would like to highlight one of the most
memorable places that we were fortunate to visit; Agama River Camp.
This camp is situated about 20km from Soussusvlei en-route to Sesriem.
It's a rustic but very spectacular establishment, an experience that
everyone should have the privaledge to enjoy.
The road leading up to the camp is as breathtaking as the camp itself.
The scenery is spectacular, especially at sunset. As you can see this is
dirt road area, but the roads are well maintained and scraped regularly.
No need for a 4x4.
The camp signboard reveals very little of what you can expect once you enter
the gate. Only thing we missed was the river. In this area you are lucky if you
see running water. But the campsites are on the river bank and this river has
been known to flow from time to time.
The main building is actually the owners residence, but also serves the purpose
of the reception office, restaurant and pub. The best place to be at sunset is on
the roof of the main building from where you can enjoy a sundowner and
experience the breathtaking sunsets that this area bestows on you.
The campsites and large and most unique. All the sites are situated under
large trees, providing plenty of shade from the scortching sun.
The sites are semi enclosed with reeds, providing some privacy from one
another. The ground is level and is raked every morning.
Each site has its own dustbin, basin with running water, work surface and
light that you are able to connect to your battery. Each site also has it's own
fire place and wood can be bought from reception. The camp does not have
electricity, but this just adds to the unique ambience of this place.
The sites are situtated in such a way that you don't feel crowded. As far as
I can remember there are only a handful of sites (8 if I'm not mistaken).
The sites are within walking distance from the main building, restaurant
and pub.
We enjoyed great times on the patio of the main building, the place were
guests get together to mingle and simply enjoy one anothers company.
The owners Jonathan & Monique Leach are fantastic hosts and they
make you feel most welcome.
The campsite ablutions are something totally unique, rustic but clean,
with running water and flushing toilets.
The "donkey" is stocked late afternoon, which ensures running hot
water till around 20h00. The ablutions are semi covered,
which provides you the unique experience of bathing under the stars,
bring you own candle and bubblebath!
The ablutions are neat and very very clean.
Toilet paper is always in good supply.
Since our visit last year they have added rustic chalets to their
accommodation. From the outside the chalets look very rustic but you
can see that the interior is a home away from home, neat, clean,
comfortable and very naturally decorated, keeping in the theme of this
wonderful part of Africa.
Each chalet also has stairs leading up to the roof, from where you can
enjoy a sundowner and the breathtaking sunsets in privacy.
This area can get very very hot and the pool provides some relief.
Always clean, always inviting and it has a fantastic view from the
deck chairs.
The surrounding area provides beautiful scenery and you are able to take
extended walks in any direction.
This turely is a wonderful place. One of those places that you've visited
once and just know you'll definitely visit again.............soon!
